Doctors & Sense - School-Based Services

Courtney Bishop, LPC

Question:  My family has been through a lot of stress over the past few months, and I have noticed some behavior changes in my youngest son.  I think that he needs some counseling services, however, my job does not allow me to take time off during the day, and he has missed so much school already that we are close to violating the truancy policy.  Are there any options for me other than signing up for services at the local mental health clinic?

Answer:  Many families face the same dilemma that you do: choosing between work/time constraints, and getting the help that is needed.  Community Counseling Services, Inc. offers school based counseling services in many of the school districts within Garland, Hot Springs, Pike, Montgomery, and Clark counties.  More specifically, we provide services within Hot Springs School District, Mountain Pine School District, Lake Hamilton School District, Lakeside School District, Jessieville School District, Murfreesboro School District, Center Point School District, Amity School District, Glenwood School District, Fountain Lake School District, Caddo Hills School District, Mount Ida School District, Malvern School District, and Magnet Cove School District.  CCS therapists and case managers work out of offices located on the school campuses, and they work around the school schedule, avoiding pulling children out of their core academic classes.  This allows them to receive counseling services without being pulled out of school and taken to appointments elsewhere.  One unique aspect of school based services is our inclusion of the school as part of the treatment team.  This allows us to communicate with specific school staff regarding special circumstances or strategies for helping the children succeed academically, as well as personally.  Services provided at school include individual therapy, group therapy, case management, family therapy, crisis intervention, and collateral contact.  Psychiatric evaluations and medication management are provided as needed at the closest CCS office.  Many treatment teams also offer summer and holiday programs, providing involvement in the community and socialization over the school breaks.  To find out if your child can receive school based counseling services, or if you have any questions, please call Community Counseling Services at (501) 624-7111.
