Doctors and Sense - Concerta for ADHDLisa Carpenter, LACQuestion: My son has been diagnosed with ADHD. The doctor has prescribed Concerta. I am concerned with the side effects and the long term use. Could you please give me some information on this?
Answer: Concerta is a fairly new product prescribed for the treatment of ADHD. As with most medications, there are several side effects to watch for during the course of treatment. One of the primary complaints associated with Concerta's use is stomach upset which usually ceases after a couple of weeks. As with any new medication, if you see any negative changes in your son's behavior, you should call your doctor immediately. This medication does require that you follow special procedures such as not skipping a dose because it has to build up in the system before receiving its maximum benefits. Please keep regular appointments with the doctor to monitor the medication and possible side effects.
I have been told by clients using this drug that they are benefitting from it and have had few side effects, if any, compared to other ADHD medications they have taken. You did not tell me how old your son is but as he gets older and more mature, his need for the medication may lessen. Once again, please, talk to your doctor about any concerns regarding side effects or changes in your son's behavior.
